Calluses are located on the soles of the feet, particularly the 'balls,' while corns are located on the toes. A callous may form secondarily to a bunion deformity, a prominent metatarsal bone on the bottom of the foot or a Tailor's Bunion on the outside of the foot. A hammertoe can cause friction on the toe joints and a painful corn may develop. Your health care provider will make the diagnosis after looking at your skin. In most cases, tests are not needed. Treatment The bump or prominence that characterizes this health problem may become reddened and enlarged in people who wear inappropriate footwear, or footwear that does not accommodate your deformed forefoot. Instead of your shoe being the shape of your foot—although it might be in some parts of your shoe—your bunion begins to shape the end of your shoe and an observable expansion develops in that location. This shoe molding is not without its consequences for your bunion, however. The pressure from your shoe on your big toe bump or prominence may irritate the skin on the side and top of your bump. This is an inflammation of the tissue surrounding the Achilles tendon. The pain occurs in the back of the heel or the back of the ankle and in the lower calf. The pain usually improves after a warm up period. Swelling and morning stiffness are usually experienced in severe cases. Events that can cause Achilles tendonitis may include rapid increase of speed, hill running, rigid shoes, overpronation or simply lack of flexibility in the calf muscles. Treatments usually include stop exercising, rest, ice, non steroidal anti-inflammatory, flexing and stretching the calf muscles before and during exercise and wearing custom fitted orthotics prescribed by your podiatrist. bunion callus The best way to alleviate bunion pain is to wear shoes that fit properly. Soaking feet in warm water can temporarily relieve pain associated with bunions. Orthotics can provide extra support and protection and help place the foot in the correct position within the shoe. Your podiatrist can also recommend exercises to maintain join mobility and prevent stiffness. Repeated pressure and friction against a bony prominence over long periods of time cause a callus. Calluses usually develop under the ball of the foot, which typically carries the majority of the body weight. Calluses can be treated with over-the-counter callus removers, or can be trimmed by a podiatrist. Doctors and experts have been telling us for years on the same subject that injury to our feet caused by high heels can be permanent and yet we continue to use them. The only question that arises is that, is fashion more important than our health? This is a question that we must definitely ask ourselves before slipping into our new pair of high heels. Bunions, fractures, strain on feet, back, and ankles are just some of the consequences of wearing high heeled shoes. But you might be thinking who cares, right? For patients suffering from more serious biomechanical disorders the custom-made (rigid) Orthotics provide a better solution. The devices are only available from a Podiatrist. Over-pronation is the most common ailment most people suffer from. Conversely, the opposite of 'pronation' is 'supination'. People suffering from this manifestation find their feet roll outwards or 'supinate' and the arch stiffens up remaining high as the foot makes contact with the ground. The deformity affects a mere 5 percent of the population and is called a Cavus or High Arch Foot. Supinators need custom-made Orthotic devices that correct the malfunction. Fill a bowl with warm water. Add a few drops of lavender oil, tea tree oil or your favourite oil. Place your feet in the bowl and swish the water around your feet. Stay here for about 5 - 10 minutes. Take your feet out of the bowl and dry with feet. Use a generous amount of oil rub briskly over the sole of one foot, taking time to follow the contours of your foot, paying attention to the arches, heels and top of your foot. A daily foot care program should be designed to help you prevent dry feet as well as provide proper care for already occurring problems. Nail fungus is another common problem that can make feet unattractive. The dark, moist surroundings created by shoes and stockings make the feet susceptible to fungal infection, which may cause the nail to thicken and become yellow or brownish. Oral and topical medications sometimes eliminate a fungus, but it can return if the medication is discontinued. Curing a fungal infection may require the permanent removal of the nail. After surgery to permanently remove the nail plate, the body generates a hardened skin covering the sensitive nail bed. When this covering has developed, normal activities can be resumed and women can use nail polish on the area.
